Sir Thomas Malory (d.1471), the author of Le Morte D’Arthur (Death of Arthur) (1485), is usually identified as Sir Thomas Malory from Warwickshire, who was a knight before 1442. It is believed that Le Morte D’Arthur was written in prison when its author was charged with crimes of robbery, theft, and rape after 1450. The fact that much of the work was translated from a French book has led to a proposition that Malory was then a hostage held in France during the French wars. Despite his misty identification, Malory remains an influential figure in early English literature, and his romance is considered the first prose account in English of the rise and fall of the legendary King Arthur and the knightly fellowship of the Round Table.
