Then Hinguar went east with his ships and Hubba remained in Northumbria, having gained victory with cruelty…

Then immediately afterwards, he sent a boastful message to the king that he should bow down in tribute³ if he valued his life. The messenger came to King Edmund and quickly delivered Hinguar’s message to him: “Hinguar, our king, keen⁴ and victorious on sea and on land, is power over many people and now comes quickly here with an army to land so that he might have winter quarters here with his troop. Now he commands you to share your secret treasure and wealth of your ancestors with him immediately, and you are to be his under‑king⁵ if you wish for any life, for you do not have enough power to be able to withstand him.”
