Intercultural communication refers to communication between people from different cultural backgrounds. It happens when people of different nations, ethnic groups or sub‑cultures interact with one another.
Cultural differences may cause misunderstandings in communication. Our values, beliefs, customs, thinking patterns and non‑verbal behaviors are all shaped by our own culture. We tend to judge others’ behavior according to our own cultural standards. This is called ethnocentrism.
In intercultural communication, barriers often come from several sources. First, cultural prejudice and stereotypes make people view other cultures with fixed biased opinions. Second, different norms of verbal and non‑verbal communication may lead to confusion. Gestures, eye contact, space distance and time concepts may carry different meanings in different cultures.
To achieve effective intercultural communication, people should develop cultural awareness. We need to respect cultural diversity, avoid ethnocentrism, learn about other cultures, and adjust our own communication behaviors. Empathy, the ability to understand other people’s feelings and situations, also plays a vital role.
