Human language has two major forms: the spoken form and the written form. Listening‑speaking belong to oral language, while reading‑writing belong to written language. They are closely connected, yet quite different.
Listening‑speaking is primary. Spoken language appeared long before writing. For thousands of years, human beings communicated only by speech. Every normal human can speak and listen. Oral language is natural, spontaneous and used in daily face‑to‑face interaction. It depends heavily on context, tone of voice, gestures and facial expressions. Misunderstandings can be repaired immediately during conversation.
Reading‑writing is secondary. Writing is a human invention. Not all cultures have a writing system. People must receive special training to master reading and writing. Written language is usually more formal, organized and complete. It can be kept permanently and spread across time and space. Without immediate physical context, written texts rely entirely on words themselves to convey meaning.
Oral and written languages influence each other. Spoken expressions may enter written works; written rules also shape people’s speech. A full mastery of language requires competence in both oral and written channels.
